Computation
Addition, subtraction, multiplication and division are the foundation of this theme. Students learn mental math strategies and techniques to master basic facts. All four operations are taught using step-by-step procedural methods with an emphasis on place value and calculations. Organizing, rounding, and estimating numbers, participants find reasonable sums, differences, products, and quotients. Estimation is emphasized as a technique by which students check their work, a skill which is valuable during assessments, and throughout life. Students make real-life connections as they use their computation skills to interpret bar graphs, calculate the mean of a set of data, and solve word problems related to money. Students identify patterns, use mental math strategies, and basic facts in order to solve problems that involve multiple digits. They find the product of multi-digit factors and quotients with two-digit divisors. As always in Camelot Learning, strengthening and expanding mathematical vocabulary terms is emphasized. This unit teaches students how to master basic facts and use them to successfully calculate solutions for problems with addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
